Texas Historical Marker Unveiling: Bishop College

The Texas Historical Commission has recognized Bishop College in Marshall as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker. The designation honors Bishop College as an important and educational part of local history.


A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 1500 West Grand Avenue starting at 3 p.m. The Harrison County Historical Commission welcomes the public to share in and witness this exciting historical event.


Bishop College was an historically black college, founded in Marshall, Texas in 1881 by the Baptist Home Mission Society.  It served students in East Texas until 1961 when the administration moved the college to Dallas.
