San Augustine County

San Augustine County is a perfect vacation spot for Texas nature enthusiasts, hunters and fisherman, and photographers. This county has several parks, wilderness areas, and lakes to explore and enjoy. The northeastern corner of San Augustine County is fringed by the Sabine National Forest, while the southeastern corner contains the Sam Rayburn Reservoir and Angelina National Forest.

Visit Angelina National Forest and become immersed in the picturesque visions of Texas nature all around. See babbling brooks of crystal clear water gushing up from Boykin Springs under a canopy of towering hardwood trees, or go bird watching for endangered species such as the bald eagle or red-cockaded woodpecker. Hunting and fishing are also permitted at the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, one of the most popular lake vacation destinations in Northeast Texas.
Located near Kountze, Texas, Big Thicket National Preserve has fun activities for every member of the family. Go hiking on verdant woodland trails, or kayak or canoe through the cool water of the Neches River or Village Creek, registered on the Texas State Paddling Trail. Go horseback riding, biking, backpacking, or go fishing for the perfect catch. Bring the kids to the Big Thicket National Preserve Visitor’s Center to enjoy the interactive Discovery Center.


Camp, hike, or bird watch in the breathtaking Sabine National Forest, a portion of which is located in northern San Augustine County. Look for rare, majestic bald eagles dipping down into the reservoir to catch a fish. Take the family to spend the day boating or fishing like the pros on Toledo Bend Reservoir, an ideal fishing area for largemouth bass.  
San Augustine County is home to seventy Texas Historical Markers. Learn about San Augustine, Texas’, fascinating history at one of its many historic buildings or cemeteries.  Visit historic homes such as the Elisha Roberts Home, which once sheltered Sam Houston and Jim Bowie, the Newt Whitton Home, the Inlow Lee Mathews Home, and the A.C. Ketchum Home.


Mission Nuestra delos Dolores de los Ais is a registered State Archeological Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was constructed in 1717 along Ayish Bayou, and is near the El Camino Real road. Tour the visitor’s center and delve into the extensive archaeological archives.

San Augustine County hosts several annual events. In October, travel to downtown San Augustine for the Crappie Fish Festival. Taste the freshest crappie catches, shop from talented arts and crafts vendors, and see the crappie weigh-ins. The Sassafras Festival also takes place in the month of October. Visit this festival for servings of sassafras tea, jelly, and candy. Taste the best of local bar-be-que at the annual BBQ Cookoff, shop the streets of downtown San Augustine, or watch a pet show.

Whether one prefers viewing nature in all its glory, enjoying Texas-style celebrations, or learning more about the state we call home, San Augustine County is one that should not be overlooked.
