Sumi Japanese Ink Painting Classes Scheduled

Published:

Sumi Japanese Ink Painting classes are scheduled with artist Mieko Hathaway on Thursdays, June 16, 23, and 30 at Gingko Leaf Gallery in Marshall.

Sumi ink painting uses techniques found in Japanese ink painting. The goal is simplification and a suggestion of the object the artist sees. This style was heavily influenced by the Oriental understanding that black ink is not simply black. It has many different shades, representing the highest level of color simplification. Traditionally a white surface is used and within this class rice paper is used as well as students learning to create their ink using a stone. The classroom atmosphere is quiet and meditative with Japanese music played during those times when the instructor is allowing students to work.

Mieko Hathaway grew up in Japan with a strong interest in art since childhood. She has studied art throughout her life and has worked in acrylic, watercolor, casein, enameling/cloisonne, clay sculpture, and sumi-e using Japanese brush and sumi ink. Hathaway took sumi-e lessons as part of her regular curriculum during her school years.

Hathaway has traveled abroad for many years, enjoying multi-cultural arts, histories, and people. In the past few years she is trying to bring fine arts to the communities where she lives through the Jefferson Pilgrimage Fine Arts Show, Marshall Art League Spring Show, Marshall Regional Arts Council's Membership Art Show and more. Through volunteer work she enjoys meeting area artists.

In recent years she owned The Gallery in Jefferson and worked at Mieko's Studio also in Jefferson. Currently she is represented at Gingko Leaf Gallery and the Ron Atwood Gallery in Jefferson. Hathaway is a member of the Hoover Watercolor Society in Shreveport, Marshall Art League, and the Jessie Allan Wise Garden Club in Jefferson. She has won numerous awards for her outstanding creative art.

Classes are available from 10 a.m. - Noon for ages 14 to adult or 5-7 p.m. for adults only. $90 covers three weeks of classes and supplies. Advance registration is required and space is limited. Deadline to sign up is June 11. Call 903.471.5225 for information.
