Center

Experience Center’s hospitality at its upbeat, exciting local events. The annual What-A-Melon Festival is held during the month of July. Enjoy a taste of ripe, juicy local watermelon, watch a pageant, or ride with the kids on fun carnival rides. Watch several of the watermelon-themed contests, such as the Seed Spittin’ Contest, Watermelon Carving Contest, Largest Bite Contest, and Largest Watermelon Contest. Stroll along the picturesque town square, see a movie at the historic Rio Theater, or step into the past when you enter the stunning Shelby County Historic Courthouse. Visit the Shelby County Historical Society Museum & Library to learn interesting facts about the history of Center and surrounding towns, such as the tragic 1900 Center Fire that destroyed many buildings on the south side of the Square. Lake Pinkston is a popular fishing destination for tourists and locals alike. Boating can be treacherous, so bank fishing is the preferred method by which one can catch catfish, sunfish, and crappie. www.shelbycountychamber.com
