Henderson has a fun, yet unusual way of honoring their local heritage. In November, it is home to the Heritage Syrup Festival, a celebration of ribbon cane syrup making. Activities at the festival include watching syrup-making demonstrations, browsing arts and crafts booths, or taking a hayride. Take a walking tour of historic downtown Henderson, one can see buildings such as the Old Palace Theatre, the Southwestern Hotel, or the Opera House. Visit the Depot Museum Complex for more interesting historical facts about Henderson and the surrounding area. The Depot Museum Complex houses the Rusk County History Museum and the Children's Discovery Center. Tour the Howard Dickinson House, built in 1855, where Sam Houston was once a frequent visitor.  At Lake Forest Park, take advantage of a picnic area, a playground for the little ones, and a one mile walking trail. Fish for species such as catfish or crappie. www.visithendersontx.com
