Hot Peas 'N Butter Appear in Lufkin
The Angelina Arts Alliance has scheduled a multicultural music concert as part of its annual Family Funday Series. Hot Peas ‘N Butter perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the Temple Theater on the Angelina College Campus.
Hot Peas ‘n Butter, a nationally touring and award-winning band from Brooklyn, explore roots music from a variety of cultural traditions in their seven albums for families. This summer, they release a collection of new songs — Back to the Land — that explore the rootsy music from North American and other traditions while celebrating human connections to each other and to the planet.
The title track is a rousing bluegrass tune with special guests Laurie Berkner, Peter Yarrow, (Peter Paul & Mary) and Dan Zanes, recognizing the environmental challenges for Earth, with hopeful lyrics encouraging listeners to find their way “back to the land.”
The messages of peace and hope extend throughout the album, which ranges from country and bluegrass, to brassy Dixieland jazz and to a rhythmic South African folk song. The album ends with two tracks that reflect the signature Hot Peas ‘n Butter Latin sound.
The optimistic tone of Back to the Land is musically reminiscent of some of the classics of children’s albums by artists like Doc Watson and Pete Seeger.
“I wanted us to get back to the kind of music I grew up with,” says producer and HPNB band leader Danny Lapidus. “We wanted these new songs to honor the great tradition of children’s music where families could all sing along and share the experience.”
Both insightful and entertaining, the lyrics highlight the importance of coming together to respect and protect the Earth.
“We believe that learning and having fun go hand-in-hand and we’re thrilled to be able to bring this caliber of family programming to East Texas. We hope everyone will bring their kids and grandkids to this fun and educational show that all ages will enjoy,” said Jennifer Allen, Executive Director of the Angelina Arts Alliance.
A study guide is available on the Angelina Arts Alliance website and upon request.
General admission tickets are on sale now, priced at $5 for kids and $10 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at the Temple Theater box office.
